Dace goes up to Factor Swanson with a bit of a strange request.

"Factor Swanson," he says after the customary salute. "Namer Rozalina and I were approached by a Godsman by the name of Maelfina yesterday, requesting assistance in tracking down a certain Kathryn. She....said the assistance would be a "favor to a friend", whatever that's supposed to mean. Either way, the name is one that we suspect goes back a while, so to track her down we'll need full access to the Prison Archives. Will this be granted for the duration of this investigation?"

Assuming permission is granted, Dace would set out immediately towards the Prison Archives and begin digging up anything he could find on the former Harbinger House patient. In particular he begins his investigation by looking up the following:

1) When and how she arrived in Sigil
2) What world she originated from
3) What faction she was a part of
4) What her professed faith was
5) What her trade/ profession was
6) Known associates
7) Known enemies
8) Known possessions
9) Frequented locales
10) Monetary Wealth as recorded
11) Crime committed/ whether she got into Harbinger House by a crime or willingly submitted herself
12) Incarcerations prior to Harbinger House

Apparently SwanÂ’s Son wasnÂ’t savvy on the dark regarding any prisoners that matched DaceÂ’s description but he authorized Dace full, but supervised, access to the archives. Unfortunately, DaceÂ’s search and numerous inquiries came up largely fruitless- most likely due to the MercykillersÂ’ lack of contact with the individual being searched. Of note, were a couple of items:

1) Per faction collaborative intelligence, there was a break-in at the archives in the Barracks several months prior. Only one file was missing after the break-in: that belonging to one “Subject 94.” Dace figures this sounds like the designation of an inmate at an asylum.

2) It is required that Mercykillers browsing the faction archives sign in and sign out. In the browsing log, Dace noted that a Justicar named Zadara had been extensively accessing the Harbinger House files over the previous two months.

Subject 94...

He cross checked exactly when this break in and theft happened, as well as whether or not any casualties were reported. Guess it's time to say hi to Hograth, maybe-

He blinked as he gazed over the next report. Zadara.... that name sounded vaguely familiar. Who was it who mentioned it...

He looked over the registry to discern which particular files this Justicar had gone through, and if available, traced them himself. Additionally, he'd try to look over any direct communications between Harbinger House, the rest of the Godsmen and the Mercykillers as of the last two months, along with any reports submitted by Zadara herself within the last -three- months.

Once the Archives were exhausted of all pertinent trails, he turned to the supervisor with him. "If I may ask ((insert rank of the supervisor here)), do you have any idea if a Justicar Zadara is in today, and if so, where I can find her?"

There were casualties in the break-in but not at the barracks- not too far outside the Barracks a Harmonium Notary was murdered in ostentatious fashion - which served as a distraction for the perpetrator to get in. It was an unrecognizable human female who seemed adept at acrobatics that later escaped via portal.

The registry did not require listing of particulars, but the section which had been searched. A closer look revealed that the Justicar had checked out several files pertaining to Harbinger House (most likely the majority of files available as there wasn't much left) and had not yet checked them back in.

As the minder went off to check to discern Zadara's whereabouts, he left the sign in log alone with Dace. The archives were regularly accessed, particularly by faction High-ups, and it was likely that no one would notice if Dace erased his sign in. However, if Dace did not remove his name and if someone in the future wanted to know about Harbinginger House, they would be cognizant of the fact that Dace was here today.

In other words, Dace had a choice between keeping his integrity or his anonymity.

Zadara was currently out on assignment, though she had a scheduled break and hiatus at the beginning of the next week where she would check into the Prison then attend a "meeting" (unspecified where and when) before resuming duties.

She had only submitted one report in the last three months, it was regarding the capture of a blood war arms dealer located in the city of Curst who had been disrupting his competitors with highly illegal tactics that involved several murders within Sigil.

Dace continued reading about the attack on the Barracks, in particular looking for information on the portal used, as well as the name of the dead Notary. Was it opened by a wand, an incantation? Or did this thief run into the Abyss? The assassins weapon of choice is also looked for.

The fact that this Zadara still hadn't checked in so much material was a bit surprising. Once more, he tries to dig up any reports by or on Zadara herself, whether they were about Harbinger House or some other matter, continuing to do so till the supervisor returned.

The thought of tampering with the registry didn't even cross his mind. After directly asking Swans Son for access and being watched by another agent as he searched, discretion was hardly on the table anyway.

EDIT: \\ Saw Zadara's response about the reports just as I posted...

In the name of being thorough, Dace looks up the report on the Curst Arms Dealer.

The extent of the details in the report indicate that the assailant appeared on the roof, apparently taunting those below, then seemed to be taking a suicidal jump from the top of the Barracks to the ground- leading by her hooded head.

Midway through the fight, a horizontal portal appeared and she vanished within. Attempts to locate this portal have been met with little success. So many unsuccessful attempts have been made to locate the nature and key of this portal that it has been determined that the portal was likely a temporary one, or perhaps one of many in Sigil that move from place to place. It seems unlikely that Dace can glean any more valuable information about the file theft at the Barracks by accessing Triad resources (be they archives or individuals). There is a sense though, that more will be revealed about this theft as his own investigation continues.

Dace frowned at the lack of specific details.

No one plans an escape around a moving portal, so...

He takes a moment more to review the report on the arms dealer before wrapping up and signing out, thanking the supervisor for his time.

"So, out of curiosity..." he asks. "What are the procedures for checking Archived records out, and how long are we normally allowed to hold on to them before bringing them back?"

The arms dealer was a gitzerai named Dey'arteb. Officially of the Sinker faction, he was moderately well known in the seedier parts of Sigil as a hot-head and a trouble maker. Recently he had gotten in deep with the Baatezu in Sigil for selling weapons to both Baatezu and Tanar'ri - which violated an exclusivity contract the Baatezu had him sign (Dey'arteb apparently didn't pay close enough attention to the agreement document with the Baatezu but the clause was nestled in there, hidden well). Unsurprisingly, the Tanar'ri had him sign no such agreement.

He had taken a bit of reprieve from his Baatezu detractors in Curst, and that's where Zadara had found him. Apparently Zadara had been on this assignment for quite some time and it took her a longer time than was expected capturing a small-time arms dealer. His sentence was a complete dissolution of his business, torture, and finally execution. Currently he was in the dungeons and playing target to a few young eager initiates testing out the more esoteric torturing equipment.

When asked about the procedures to check out classified documents, the minder gave the following response:"

"The fact that you have access to this area means you're free to check out any documents that haven't been classified or aren't already checked out. You can hold items for up to two weeks unless you place a special request to hold them in longer."

"Anything of interest that you'd like to check out?"

"Well, I was looking for a couple, but I think Justicar Zadara still has them...any idea when she's due to bring back the files she took?"

Once he gets his answer, he goes off to rendezvous with Rozalina at Khazeets.

"Right, time to poke around the crime scene. I'll poke around at the scene itself on the ground and rooftops. If there's any trail on the portal, I may be able to find it...plus I can get up to the rooftops without them fussing. I suggest you go in directly and ask the Harmonium themselves about the mess, though be careful; they get awfully touchy about their turf."

Unless Rozalina disagrees, he proceeds to the crime scene, first looking around the ground level where the Notary was murdered, and where the portal was said to have opened, keeping an eye out for any possible framing, as many portals in Sigil tend to be located within gates, windows or the like.

After searching the ground level, he'd try to access the rooftops ((assuming these are the civilian roofs and not the barracks?)).
