The woman's question seems to immediately bring his focus back on the main subject of the meeting. He stops looking at her and nods.
"Yes, of course. Sorry. Just, two more things before we start."
Again, he brings a hand under his cloak and reaches for one of his bags. When he takes it out he is holding a pouch that by the sound it makes contains most probably coins. It seems a little too empty and light to contain 300 merts, though, let alone 3000 jinx.
"First, your money. Three thousand in front, if I remember correctly." He states quietly as he walks toward her, stopping a couple of steps away and handing her the pouch with a slow gesture. He seems to search for her gaze now, trying for the first time to lock eyes with her through her mask, and when he speaks again, his voice seems to be slightly colder than before.
"Second... is there any other presence here in this room I should be aware of?"

Her reactions to the material gain seemed simply put indifferent. If she cared at all about the actual quantity, she didn't show it at all. She takes the bag with nonchalance, pocketing it without the slightest of efforts to measure it, once more reinforcing the feel that she either trusts him or simply doesn't care for it. "Yes, three thousand jink as promised." she confirmed.
That's not a lot of substance.
The voice at least acknowledged it, but she only thought absentmindedly I don't need gold. But if I don't ask any, it's suspicious. as their eyes became locked together to a stare-off. Her brown calculative eyes meeting his without hesitation or any intent to avert. But as he speaks, there is indeed a reaction, as she tenses visibly as the reflexful fight or flight senses initiate. But before she can make anything hasty, the voice reminds her.
Say no. He "shouldn't be aware of my presence".
All the while she had been holding her breath, now she suddenly continued to breath and thought, You're going to get us killed.. or worse. But she did comply, the eye contact broken for the brief moment when the eyes darted to look toward right even if she didn't face that direction, then returned to meet his gaze and state in the usual even tone. "No. We are the only two here."
Well that'd be ironic, now wouldn't it? You might get to the front page of SIGIS with that. "Woman and/or Man Dies in Autopsy, Cause of Death Unknown"
She was amused even if it was a definitely wrong situation to not remain perfectly master of her feelings. At least she luckily had the mask to conceal the smirk, but perhaps a slight hint could be seen through the eyeholes. You're terrible she thought.
Hey now, you're the one that's crazy. Talking to yourself all the time.
That was a sobering thought, and the moment of joy was washed away. Of course he'd think there might be someone else, why wouldn't he? It was after all very simple, and not all that uncommon. "Was that all?" she asked out "loud" this time.

He looked at her, as she took the purse.
Either she was very professional and had already dealt with large sums of money, or she simply was acting cool, maybe not wanting to be rude and checking the bag content in his presence.
In both cases, he had to admit to himself he was a little disappointed by her lack of reaction.
I wonder when did I become someone who likes to see people uncomfortable, he found himself thinking.
But then he asked his question, and at that point there had been something.
Now, he was almost sure she was the only other person in the room aside of him, but considering her behaviour, her murmuring... he still had felt the need to ask anyway, even if only to see her reaction. At least this time he had been rewarded.
If he had an opinion on her answer, he decided not to voice it, nor to show, replying to her last question with a simple nod of the head and turning once more his back to her to reach the portable hole.
"Now, to our corpse..." he said to himself once he was on the edge of the hole again.
Without realizing a warning could have been appreciated given the circumstances, he suddenly starts murmuring some words, an arcane formula, gesturing toward the opening.
It is a matter of seconds, then a lizard-like body, covered in small, bright coloured scales starts emerging from the hole, as an invisible force drags it in the air and to the middle of the room.
"I hope it will fit the table" He says almost absent-mindedly, his stare locked on the creature.

He's dangerous.
Said the voice to her. What makes you say that? she thought and looked to her right side when she did so.
Keeps his opinions to himself, he has secrets. Secrets are dangerous.
It made sense, in a way. Though to her it appeared overreacting, after all the man just might not care much. Much like her and material possessions, it meant little. Her eyes twitched a little and she started to absentmindedly rub her left upper arm, the motion was quite forbidding and a soft sound similar to wooden furniture dragging against hard floor, luckily most of the sound disrupted by the thick clothing. Still the pain was there, phantom pain really as there were no arms to feel the pain. Usually it helped to just see her arm being tended to relieve it luckily.
Oh, a reptilian, do you think he killed it, or is it his friend?
The phantom pain had caused her to miss the procuring of the said corpse, but the eyes quickly snapped to look at it. Barely having heard the question, she dismissively said without really knowing what she had answered to "Huh, sure." after a moment she understood what Rhistel was talking as the lizardman(?) was being placed on the table, tail and feet poking out of it, but otherwise it fit on just barely. She didn't miss a beat as she leaned over to study the creature head to toes. Wooden palm hoovering just above the scales to see if there were any clear indication of penetration between the scales, cut through the scales or bashing the scales in.
After the preliminary "bruise" checking, she concentrated on looking and cataloguing any possible and visible magical wounds, such as darkened scales, which she would double check by trying to scratch possible misleading dirt off with the wooden digits. Next stop on the routine check was to look at mouth for a couple of things; if teeth appeared to be bit in hard, as such possibly broken which could hint for extreme pain or fear, any anomalies like residues of poisonous or infectuous substances, abnormal colored flesh textures. After this she would check on the eyes, if they retained their usual hue or seemed to have been re-coloured.
Finally she looks at the claws and feet of the creature, in an attempt to find possible remnants of either the location it was on, or remnants of assaillant had it been on a fight. She would lift limbs or turn over the corpse fairly gently as to get a whole picture of all the wounds, bruises and signs that could lead to cause of death, before she would say anything. Although would Rhistel speak, she might answer.
((If you want me to make up details, feel free, currently I'm going with the assumption that you're making up what she can find. ;) ))

(( oh yes, forgive my being slow, I do have informations but wasn't sure I could write them before knowing what she was going to do!
Aside from that, I must admit I never opened a humanoid lizard before, so I suppose at some point some "details making up" will be needed anyway :°) ))
As the woman approached the body, Rhistel crossed his arm on the chest and leant nonchalantly against a nearby table, some steps away from her.
He was not interested in that procedure and made no secret of it, so he just used that time to study the woman and her movements, a strangely disinterested look on his face.
"Oh, she is professional. Though maybe I should tell her she won't find anything on it."
The thought crossed his mind, yet he remained silent. It was part of her job, afterall, why spoil it?
It took some time to L to realize what the young man could have told her immediately.
The scales on the creature were all intact, except for what were evidently old scars: no fresh wounds, no bruises, nor even burns.
Absolutely nothing.
Sure, the creature was used to walk barefoot, and some dirt and hint of grass could still be found trapped within its claws, but aside of that, nothing else remarkable.
Still, the built seemed to match that of a male exemplar, probably a fighter, and the slight decoloration of some scales would make think of someone accustomed to armour wearing, though there was none to be seen on it, as the body had no hint of personal effects.
It was when she finally turned the body to examine its back that she realizes that what she was actually examining was not really a lizardman.
A huge, brightly painted crest ran, in fact, along its whole spine right to the top of the head, identifying the creature as one of the "planar cousins" of the lizard folk, a khaasta.
It was examining the crest the she finally noticed the only wounds the body seems to have suffered, as the bones of the crest seemed to be broken and badly bent.
Only at that point the young man spoke again, his tone still quiet.
"I would assume they are not used to sleep on their back, given their peculiar shape. I may have damaged it unintentionally."

A waste of specimen.
A weak warrior. She scoffed her annoyance involuntarely before quickly returning to reserve her feelings and opinions. After realizing the damage had been on the back, she stared at him blandly when he revealed knowing the reason. Muttering in half tone to her right, forgetting the reasons to remain discreet "He could've said that earlier..."
You could have asked him for any details.
She couldn't really argue against it, for now she didn't acknowledge Rhistel, she was hellbent on finding the cause without asking. Professional merit was in the line after all. Then again she rarely asked and just looked into things, unless only way to find out more details was to ask. This was why she prefered to work alone, finally the eyes darted back at the khaasta corpse, she used her wooden fingers as a rough guide to determine the length of the damage caused, and the shape of the bent and shatted parts. That is, if it would appear that it had been hit hard against uneven ground such as stairs, or if it appeared more like it had been stretched via torturing that caused spine to give in, or perhaps if it had irregular lacerations that could have been produced by weapons.
You should ask him, that'd make things much faster.
The voice teased and reminded, but she wouldn't give him the satisfaction. She had to do this on her ow. I can solve it just fine. she insisted to her right softly. Next she checked the length of spine if the scales naturally were intact and if it there had been any bleeding. After all, while the spine may indeed be harmed, she had no way to know whether or not it had been dead when that happened, except by crossreferencing behavior of the dead corpse upon being damaged compared to live one.

He watched her for a while, as she apparently "exchanged opinions" with herself, then, as he realized she seemed intentioned on spending more time examining the back of the creature, he finally decided to intervene again.
"It is true that I could have said it from the beginning... but then you could have thought I was trying to interfere with your work," he simply said, with a little shrug and a hint of a smile.
Now, either he was the worst liar on the planes, or he simply didn't care to try and make that statement sound credible. In both cases, he apparently seemed to realize his words could have come off as mokerish, because when he spoke again his tone was back to his usual neutral tone.
"For what concerns the back damage, by the way... it only involves the crest, and it was caused after his death. As I was saying before, I probably damaged it as I attempted to move the body the first time." He lowered his head for a moment, scratching his nose absentmindedly. "Well, let's say I basically dropped it." He then concluded.

She looked at him a moment, didn't reply and continued to study the body a while longer, but he could only theorize the alternatives which requires taking additional liberties. As such speculating and possibly wasting time, she paused a little to contemplate whether to open the head or the chest first.
Just ask him already, you're wasting everyones time.
Finally L sighed audibly, Fine she thought as she looked to her right, then finally returned her brown eyes at Rhistel. "Fine. You win." she said, the tone though mainly even, it had spiteful edge to it. A reminder why she had the extra costs for when she has company during autopsys. "By process of elimitation it leaves three likely possibilities. Natural causes, magic or alchemic agent..."
He probably knows more than he's telling. Almost as tight lipped as yourself.
A moment of pause as she contemplated on that possibility, she speculated out loud as to invoke reactions "You know how it died already. What's your real aim here?" after all, while she didn't know it to be true... people often reacted in one of two ways to accusations; get offended and dispute the fact, or correct the presumptions. Both effective methods to learn more with least possible effort.
((Oof! I'm so sorry for the delay, I really didn't mean to drag this out. But I've just had a lot in my mind lately.))

((oh, don't worry... and yes, I can relate to those kind of "problems"... though my cases can be easily described with the use of the first and last frame only, most of the times u_u...))
He patiently waited as she seemed to decide whether to take his informations into account or not -not that he really required her to, anyway- then when she spoke again, he found himself blinking in slight confusion at her words.
"Yes, of course I know how it died," he replied as he was stating the obvious, this time with a hint of genuine innocence to his words. "But as far as I'm concerned, knowing the cause doesn't really mean knowing the effects on a body. Moreover, I don't recall reading any restriction on your advertisement regarding such thing..." he then concluded, his tone now almost as cutting as hers, though he probably didn't even notice that change as he spoke.
"And about your last question... I'm sorry, what kind of other reasons one could have to be here, in the middle of the night with a corpse, other than the one clearly stated in the S.I.G.I.S. by yourself?"
And there it was again, that hint of what one would call sarcasm if only it was done on purpose.
This time though, he didn't bother correcting his statement, as if he wasn't concerned at all about giving a wrong impression.

Something in his reply irked her, it wasn't the fact that he was trying to "abuse the unelaborated rules" for to her there was only one rule, her own. Rather what irked her was that, to her, he appeared to consider himself better than herself. "Most come to find out the cause of death. Which you already know." she stated the obvious, there was edge in the tone.
Careful. He's like you. Studying the most efficient way to kill, it's not smart to provoke him or get him cautious.
Looked to her right initially a little more agitated, but gave it a little more consideration as the surge of irrationality faded. Fixated her eyes to Rhistels again to ask once more in the even and soft tone. "How did you kill it?" once more she leapt into conclusions to provoke informational answers.
Besides, if you're on his good side while you hate him, it'll be easier to ambush him when he's unaware of danger. Though mind those magical wardings he has on him.
She contemplated the voices words, she hadn't exactly played with the thought quite so far. Looking to the right We're not going to kill him... she finally thought. Of course, now the seeds of thought had been rooted and she couldn't stop to think about it. The brown eyes studying the mans demeanor and possessions. "I need to know to save time." she said after unreasonable amount of time had passed. "Opening the entire corpse is going to be messy and lengthy process. If if's alchemical agent, I'd prefer to know if it was digested or applied through sharp implement. If it was magic; was it a necromancy or illusion spell? it'd seem she dismisses the hypothesis that it could be any other spellschool If natural causes... well since you know how, I presume you know where to look at."
You just want him to be a spellcaster now, don't you?
Of course she did. She still desired answers to the most interesting questions. Though she understood concepts of pacts and bloodlines, there were still questionmarks in what made some able to cast spells where others failed... some unfound factor, and she was bound to find it. All she required was a live subject.
